This marks Formula 1’s return to Africa for the first time since 1993, when Alain Prost won the final South African Grand Prix at Kyalami.Rwanda’s success is not a stroke of luck.It is the result of focused leadership, institutional seriousness and a clear national strategy to project competence on the global stage. For the rest of the continent, especially South Africa, it should serve as both inspiration and a pointed call to action.What Rwanda has delivered is a complete package. President Paul Kagame and the Rwanda Development Board treated the pursuit of Formula 1 as a long-term national priority rather than a publicity exercise.They offered a purpose-built circuit integrated into a broader development zone that includes tourism, hospitality, entertainment, innovation facilities and sports science infrastructure.The project is designed for yearround utility, not just a single race weekend. Formula 1 leadership has praised the partnership for its vision, sustainability and potential to generate lasting economic and social benefits through jobs, skills development, investment and tourism.In securing the deal, Rwanda ensured that the world’s premier motorsport series will finally race on every inhabited continent, while giving African fans, particularly the continent’s large youth population, the chance to see the sport at home and imagine themselves as engineers, technicians, entrepreneurs and future competitors.This achievement stands as a powerful example for other African countries. For decades, the continent’s global image has been disproportionately shaped by stories of instability, underdevelopment and crisis. High-profile events of Formula 1’s calibre offer a different narrative when they are executed with professionalism and long-term thinking. They project capability, modernity and ambition. They attract international media, capital and visitors who encounter an Africa of delivery rather than deficiency. Rwanda has shown that even a relatively small nation can compete successfully for such platforms when it prioritises reliability, security, ease of doing business and coherent planning. Ambition without delivery produces only announcements. Rwanda produced results. South Africa, in particular, needs to take this lesson seriously and step up as a continental leader in hosting top-tier sporting events. Few countries on the continent possess South Africa’s track record. It is the only nation to have hosted the Fifa World Cup (2010), the Rugby World Cup (1995) and the Cricket World Cup (2003). The 1995 Rugby World Cup, staged just after the end of apartheid and won by the Springboks, remains one of the most powerful moments of national unity and soft-power success in modern history.The 2010 Fifa World Cup demonstrated that South Africa could organise a global mega-event to international standards. South Africa also has deep motorsport heritage: it hosted Formula 1 races for decades, primarily at Kyalami, until 1993.That history, combined with existing circuits, private-sector interest and proven event-management experience, positions the country uniquely to lead.South African President Cyril Ramaphosa voiced his congratulations to Rwanda on X: “On behalf of the government and people of South Africa, I offer warm congratulations to His Excellency President @PaulKagame and the government and people of Rwanda on securing a 10-year agreement to host the Formula 1 African Grand Prix.‘‘South Africa shares in the pride with which Rwanda is preparing to fly the chequered flag for our continent with the hosting of a globally prestigious event at the planned Bugesera circuit from the early 2030s.‘‘This contract is a recognition of the capabilities of the Rwandan nation and of our continent more broadly. As host of the first Grand Prix on African soil in 1993 and organiser of other major global events, South Africa will be happy to provide any support we may be invited to share.”He added: “The F1 African Grand Prix is another lustrous addition to Rwanda’s growing collection of top international events, including the UCI-classified Tour du Rwanda cycling race. Congratulations, Rwanda. You are in pole position to make all of Africa proud and take motorsport to new heights.”South African sports, arts and culture minister Gayton McKenzie has been clear that the two efforts need not be viewed as rivals. Congratulating Rwanda, he stated: “We are happy for Rwanda’s 2030 F1. They have worked on it longer than SA and deserve it.” He went further in a media briefing: “This is not a competition. Rwanda applied years before I even thought I would be Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture. Rwanda has done the work … Applying for a spot on the F1 calendar is not a competition, so Rwanda has not beaten us.”McKenzie emphasised that South Africa remains focused on its own timeline, targeting 2028 or 2029 and noted that a continent of 55 countries need not be limited to a single Grand Prix when countries such as Italy have hosted more than one in a season. “We are very happy for Rwanda. We are doing the work. We are on track,” he added.McKenzie’s stance is constructive, yet the broader point remains. Past glory and parallel ambitions are not substitutes for the focused, long-horizon execution Rwanda has demonstrated. South Africa’s sports leadership and private sector have the talent, the venues and the commercial infrastructure to host at the highest level.What is required is the same seriousness: political will that transcends short-term cycles, streamlined decision-making, credible financing structures and a national mindset that treats global events as strategic assets for image, investment and inspiration. South Africa’s leadership on the continent in sport is not automatic; it must be continually earned. The broader stakes are about the continent’s image and agency. Africa does not improve its global standing through appeals or nostalgia. It does so through repeated demonstrations of competence. Rwanda has provided one such demonstration. South Africa, with its unmatched experience of staging the world’s biggest sporting events, has both the capacity and the responsibility to provide more.Rising to that responsibility means matching ambition with institutional delivery, treating national branding as serious policy and refusing to let past achievements sub-stitute for present performance. As the Bugesera circuit takes shape and the early 2030s approach, Rwanda’s Formula 1 deal will stand as evidence of what focused African leadership can achieve.For South Africa and the rest of the continent, the message is clear: excellence is possible, standards matter and the image of Africa improves when nations get serious about competing at the highest level.Rwanda has set the example.
