ZESCO to Implement 23,000 Subsidized Electricity Connections Across Zambia
ZESCO, Zambia’s state-owned electricity provider, has announced a major initiative to expand electricity access by offering 23,000 subsidized connections nationwide between 2025 and 2027. Under the program, eligible households—starting with those in the Northwestern Province—will pay a significantly reduced connection fee of just K300, while the government will cover the remaining cost difference, which normally exceeds K4,000.
The move aims to address the longstanding challenge of high connection fees that have kept electricity out of reach for many Zambian families, especially in rural and underserved areas. ZESCO spokesperson Matongo Maumbi emphasized that the program is designed to increase access to electricity for everyone and that awareness campaigns are underway in Solwezi and other communities to inform the public about this new opportunity.
However, the timing of the subsidy program, coinciding with Zambia’s upcoming election cycle, has raised questions and skepticism. Some observers suggest that the initiative may be politically motivated, aimed at winning support after years of government underperformance.
Despite this, the benefits of increased electricity access are undeniable. Affordable power connections can foster improved education, health services, and economic development in remote regions. The key to the program's success will be government commitment to sustained funding beyond the initial rollout period.
ZESCO’s subsidized connection rollout has the potential to transform Zambia’s energy landscape by making electricity more accessible than ever before. Yet, its long-term impact will depend on careful implementation, transparent management, and ongoing support from the government.
