Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has ordered an assessment of dilapidated public primary and secondary schools across the state for urgent rehabilitation. The governor gave the directive on Friday during the inauguration of the newly completed Model Technical College, Oghareki, in Ethiope West Local Government Area, saying the state must improve learning conditions for pupils and students. “I have directed that all schools in Delta State that are in deplorable condition, whether primary or secondary, should be assessed for immediate rehabilitation,” Oborevwori said. He urged the Ministries of Primary and Secondary Education to begin the assessment without delay, noting that the state had more than 1,400 primary schools and 480 secondary schools requiring sustained investment and maintenance. The governor said the State Executive Council had also directed the ministries to identify schools needing urgent intervention as part of efforts to strengthen public education.See more Punch stories on Google.Add Punch on Google Oborevwori said the new technical college was designed to equip young people with practical skills to improve their employment opportunities and economic independence. He disclosed that three more model technical colleges, located in Irri, Isoko South; Kiagbodo, Burutu; and Akugbene, Bomadi, would be completed and inaugurated before December 2026. He also announced a N50m education support fund for Miss Ogheneovo Davina, a Junior Technical II student who addressed him on behalf of her fellow students during the ceremony. She added that she would vote for Oborevwori in 2027 if she were old enough to vote. The member representing Ethiope Federal Constituency, Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, praised the quality of the project and the governor’s decision to complete it. She also commended him for promoting unity within the party in the state. The Chairman of Ethiope West Local Government Council, Christian Onogba, described the inauguration as a landmark achievement, saying the governor’s development projects and political realignment had helped foster unity across Delta State. The Oghara monarch, HRM Noble Eshemitan, Orefe III, Uku Oghara Na Me, congratulated the governor on the completion of the college. Oborevwori commended former Governor James Ibori for his contributions to the state’s development and acknowledged former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration for initiating the Oghareki Technical College project, which his government completed. The condition of school infrastructure is a key factor in creating a conducive learning environment, as dilapidated classrooms and inadequate facilities can affect teaching and learning. Regular assessment and rehabilitation of public schools are therefore important to ensuring that pupils and students have access to safe and suitable educational facilities.
