Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has renewed his demand for the immediate release of Nasir El-Rufai, former Kaduna State governor and Deputy Chairman of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, and other persons he described as political detainees. Atiku made the demand on Wednesday when he received the Kaduna State leadership of the ADC at his Abuja residence, insisting that political beliefs or associations should not be grounds for continued detention. El-Rufai is facing an amended five-count charge over alleged interception of telephone communications involving Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser. Atiku said, “The federal government has no basis to continue to hold people on the grounds of their beliefs or political association. Let’s hope that the federal government will listen to wise counsel and release them immediately.” He also placed Kaduna at the centre of the ADC’s 2027 strategy, urging party leaders to secure the state and prevent what he described as electoral manipulation. “Kaduna State will be key in all that we would do. I also want our party to win Kaduna State. We must not allow our elections to be stolen in the state or in any other state,” he said. Kashim Imam, Chairman of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, said Kaduna’s lead in the party’s membership registration must translate into votes, setting a target of one million presidential votes for Atiku. “Kaduna State came first in the registration of party members and has continued to maintain the lead. Kaduna State must deliver a minimum of one million votes for our presidential candidate,” Imam said. Isah Ashiru, ADC governorship candidate in Kaduna, expressed confidence that the party would win the governorship and secure victory for its candidates across the State.
