BRICS Expansion: Four More African Nations Invited to Join Bloc

BRICS Africa Expansion

At the Kazan BRICS summit, leaders of the bloc agreed to invite Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, and Algeria to join as full members — a move that would expand the grouping to 17 nations and make it the first multilateral economic bloc with a majority African membership.

BRICS nations already represent 37% of global GDP in purchasing power parity terms. The expansion is designed to bolster the bloc's leverage in negotiating alternatives to the US dollar in commodity trade.

All four invited nations have indicated provisional acceptance, pending ratification by their respective parliaments. Formal accession is expected by the 2027 summit.
