NATO-African Union Dialogue on Security Cooperation Yields New Framework

NATO AU Security

NATO Secretary General and AU Commission Chairperson jointly released the AU-NATO Shared Security Framework — the first formal security cooperation instrument between the two organisations — at the annual NATO Summit.

The framework establishes a permanent liaison mechanism, quarterly senior officials' meetings, and a joint capacity-building programme targeting the G5 Sahel and Horn of Africa security theatres.

Critics on both sides have raised concerns: some African diplomats see it as potential militarisation of AU policies, while NATO members debate whether expansion of out-of-area commitments strains alliance resources.
