Rwanda's Constitutional Referendum Approves Third Presidential Term

The Rwandan Electoral Board announced that 93.4% of voters endorsed a constitutional amendment removing the two-term presidential limit, with turnout exceeding 96% of registered voters.

President Kagame, in power since 2000, acknowledged the vote and said he would formally indicate his candidacy for the 2027 election in due course.

Human rights organisations expressed concern about the democratic implications while noting Rwanda's consistent performance on development indicators, including its top-ten ranking on the Ibrahim Index of African Governance.
