Durban Port Expansion
Transnet CEO Michelle Phillips officially broke ground on Phase 2 of the Durban Container Terminal Berth Expansion, a project that will make Durban the largest container port by capacity in sub-Saharan Africa upon completion.
The expansion adds 8 new deep-water berths capable of handling 24,000 TEU super-panamax vessels, eliminates the current 2-week average vessel waiting time, and integrates a 1,400-hectare inland container depot connected by a dedicated rail link.
Logistics industry representatives welcomed the announcement, noting that port inefficiency has cost South Africa an estimated R100 billion annually in diverted trade.
