Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa unveiled the western Kenya 5G Rural Network at a ceremony in Kisumu, describing it as the most significant investment in rural connectivity on the continent.

The network uses a combination of 3.5GHz licensed spectrum and 26GHz mmWave technology to deliver average download speeds of 420Mbps to communities previously dependent on 2G coverage.

Early use cases include remote diagnostics for the Aga Khan Hospital telemedicine programme and precision agriculture platforms adopted by over 18,000 smallholder farmers in the pilot.
