Kenya Achieves Universal Health Coverage With New National Insurance Act

Kenya's Social Health Insurance Fund has enrolled 22.3 million households — covering 95% of the population — following the mandatory registration deadline set by the Social Health Insurance Act.

The SHIF replaces the National Hospital Insurance Fund with a broader benefits package covering outpatient, inpatient, maternity, chronic disease, and mental health services at over 10,000 accredited public and private facilities.

Kenya's attainment of UHC is seen as a model for other medium-income African countries pursuing similar objectives under the AU's Africa Health Agenda International Conference framework.
